Japan for Singaporeans

Honest weather data, packing guides, and gear advice for the destinations Singaporeans actually go to in Japan. Updated for the 2026 season.

Japan winter scene

Japan is the most-asked destination in our DMs, by a long way. Singaporeans go for powder skiing in Hokkaido, illuminated temples in Kyoto, the Tokyo December lights, and to take grandparents on the bullet train. The packing answer is different for every one of those trips.

The headline rule: Hokkaido is colder than you think (Sapporo averages −4°C in January, Niseko nights drop to −15°C with windchill), Tokyo and Kyoto are warmer than you think (5–10°C in the day, jacket-and-jumper weather, not parka weather), and the Japan Alps fall somewhere in between. We've broken Japan up by region so you can find the guide that matches your actual trip.
